The Parish Administration Handbook provides a wealth of information on parish administration and financial management, including an explanation of the responsibilities of a parish Finance Committee under both church (Canon) and civil law.

The Handbook also includes information on the operation of centralised banking arrangements, cash handling, parish ledgers, insurance and annual reporting.

There are many ways of financially supporting the work of the Church, including making one off and regular donations or legacies.

If you are thinking of making a donation and are a UK tax payer, then you can help the Church further by filling in a Gift Aid form.

What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid allows charities to reclaim tax on charitable donations. If you are a UK taxpayer, the Diocese or a parish can reclaim 25p of tax for every £1 you give. Paying higher rate tax receives additional relief via their tax code or Self Assessment Return and should seek advice from HMRC.

How does it all work?

You need to download and complete the Gift Aid Declaration (GAD) form for payments that were made during the last four years. Enter the name of the parish which you wish to make contributions to and send the completed form to Parish Priest. The parish can then reclaim the tax back on your donations. If the donations are not recorded they cannot be included. The donations can be given either by numbered envelope, cheque or standing order. The GAD will cover all donations received by the parish.

If you wish to make your contributions by Standing Order please download the attached from. You will need to ask the Parish Priest for the parish bank account number. Once you have completed the form, send it to your Bank or Building Society.

What is the cost to you?

There is no extra cost to the donor. The tax is an extra bonus for the parish on your contribution.

What happens if I stop paying tax?

Inform the parish priest, organiser or Ed Whittaker at the Diocesan Offices to cancel your GAD. If the parish makes a claim on money recorded but you have not paid sufficient tax, you will receive a bill directly from the Inland Revenue. If you start paying tax at a future date, simply complete a new GAD.

Guidance Notes on the making of gifts for the Roman Catholic Church within the Diocese of Hallam

Gifts can be made to the Church during your life time or following your death, under your Will. However good a person’s intentions are, in the case of home made Wills and other documents those intentions may not be carried out, so we strongly recommend that you consult your own legal advisor before making any gift in your Will.

The Diocese of Hallam is administered by a Trust corporation known as Diocese of Hallam Trustee. The President of the Diocese of Hallam Trustee is the Bishop of Hallam. The Charitable Trusts are declared in a Deed dated 28th October 1981. The Diocese of Hallam is a registered Charity, Number 512021. The proposed wording in the downloadable documents below is designed to cover most of the situations in which Gifts can be given. In special circumstances or requirements we suggest that your legal advisor should consult with us so that your intentions can be met. Gifts to a charity on your death are exempt from Inheritance Tax as are Lifetime Gifts.
